Une représentation d’un évêque, possiblement Saint Donat, du sud de l'Allemagne du tout début du XVIe siècle. En bois de tilleul, sculpté, polychrome et doré, son dos est évidé. Une cavité a été aménagée afin de déposer une relique du Saint. On y trouve donc une relique, ultérieurement placée, ex ossibus de Saint Donat, avecs on certificat daté de 1827. Donat, de noble naissance romaine fut évêque d'Arezzo et subit le martyr en 360. Lesreliques ensachées de notre saint homme, sont présentées dans une thèque avec sceau épiscopal en cire. Représentation de grande qualité, de style gothique tardif. La figure est vêtue d’une tenue pontificale solennelle, avec mitre et une crosse et tient un livre dans la main gauche. La posture équilibrée, les traits du visage soigneusement modelés ainsi que les plis profonds et richement animés de la robe correspondent à l’art du statuaire Allemand des années 1500. État d’usage : au verso, traces anciennes d’anobie, crosse épiscopale dont la hampe a été rapporté, pertes de matière. Dimensionsde 102 cm sur 33 cm de large et 20 cm de profondeur. Référence 895

A depiction of a bishop, possibly Saint Donatus, from southern Germany dating from thevery early 16th century. Carved from linden wood, polychrome and gilded, itsback is hollowed out. A cavity was created to house a relic of the saint. Ittherefore contains a relic—added at a later date—from the bones of Saint Donatus, along withits certificate dated 1827. Donatus, of noble Roman birth, was bishop of Arezzo and was martyred in 360. The relics of our holy man, enclosed in a pouch, are displayed in a case bearingan episcopal wax seal. A high-quality depiction in the late Gothic style. The figure is dressed in solemn pontifical vestments, with a miter and a crosier, and holds a book in hisleft hand. The balanced posture, the carefully modeled facial features, and the deep, richly animated folds of the robe are characteristic of German statuary from the 1500s. Condition: on the reverse, old signs of woodworm damage; the shaft of the episcopal crozier has been repaired; loss of material. Dimensions: 102 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 20 cm deep.
