Buste Reliquaire d’un Saint Romain – fin XVIIe

Ils sont nombreux, ces soldats romains convertis au christianisme.  Qu'ils soient entrés dans la légion par vocation, obligation ou recherche de gloire, tous en sont sortis avec pour seule arme ... la Foi.  St Donat, StFlavien, St Expédit, St Martin de Tours, Saint Longin, Saint Hippolyte en sont de magnifiques exemples. Ici, dans cet important reliquaire, sans les attributs particuliers qui caractérisent traditionnellement chaque Saint, et sans position particulière ,il est difficile d'identifier le personnage qui est honoré. Notre homme au visage tiré est très expressif. Ce buste reliquaire massif est en bois sculpté, polychromé et doré. Il est de belles dimensions avec ses 80 cm de hauteur sur 53 de large et 42 cm de profondeur. A sa base un sceau obture la petite niche reliquaire. Ce sceau de cire rouge est aux armes d'un cardinal présentant un cheval cabré coiffé de trois étoiles, la relique a possiblement été retirée. Il s'agit d'un travail Italien de la fin du XVIIe. A noter de petits accidents, fentes et reprise à la dorure.

Saint Donatus, Saint Flavius, Saint Expeditus, Saint Martin of Tours, Saint Longinus, and Saint Hippolytus are magnificent examples. Here, in this important reliquary, without the particular attributes that traditionally characterize each saint, and without a specific pose, it is difficult to identify the person being honored. Our man, with his drawn face, is very expressive. This massive reliquary bust is made of carved, polychrome, and gilded wood. It is of considerable size, measuring 80 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. At its base, a seal covers the small reliquary niche. This red wax seal bears the arms of a cardinal depicting a rearing horse crowned with three stars; the relic may have been removed. It is an Italian work from the late 17th century. Note some minor damage, cracks, and retouching of the gilding. Reference 207
